Right out of the gate I saw the mythical Lake Whatcom largemouth!! Two of them where in among the pilings to the south of the launch in about 6 feet of water and one of them was an easy 6 pounder! That was worth the trip, so were the 7 deer, 2 minks, golden eagle and osprey I saw today! As for the fishing...it sucked, total dink fest! If you reeled slow enough you could almost tow the little things to the boat cause there was no way they were getting the hook in their mouths.

The better fish and I use that term loosely, came on a slow rolled Yamamoto grub and they ran 1 pound to 1.5 pounds and there weren't that many of them. The biggest hits were at a spinnerbait but it's like the fish forgot to open their mouths, they would come out, smack it and just slowly swim away. One about 1.5 lbs that jumped, spit out about a 2-3 inch half digested minnow so I imagine these fish have plenty of fry to eat still. I fished depths from 1 to 35 feet, in and outside grass, over grass, through grass, around rocks, logs, pilings and docks.

Think I'll let the smallies marinate another few weeks before returning? Sure love being on this lake though!

Fished the South end two days ago. I could feel my lure getting munched every cast just not too many takers. Whatcom has been the most productive lake that I have fished so far. I intend to keep going back. Unless of course I find something better. Fished alot of places in Snohomish and King county with very marginal success. The fish are just as moody as the people.
