I was excited to fish for some Redtail Surf Perch while camping in the area, and could not keep them off of our hooks. Incoming tide about 9 am, fishing with some Sand worm soft plastics. We had to call it after about half an hour becuase we didn't think we'd eat more than 10 fish. We also got to see some gray whales playing around too. Overall a great day on the beach! It was the first time surf fishing and I used my steelhead rod with a crappy reel, hoping not to ruin a nice one in the salt water.

Thanks for the post

I'm new to that type of fishing, but get out to Kalaloch once in a while. I've used some squid with limited success.

So Berkeley Soft plastics? Red? Never used a rubber bait. What size of hook? Do you bait them like you would a live worm for trout fishing?

totally recommend Berkley gulp shrimp in new penny color or white.

I had 40 pound braid going to a swivel pyramid sinker, of a couple ounces, and then a 2-4 foot leader to a size 6 or 8 Gamakatsu bait holder hook. We were on kalaloch beach, near the creek on incoming tide. And the worms were the Berkley Gulp! Camo Sand worms, but I also heard sand crabs work really well. But all you have to do is thread a sand worm on the hook and it will do the trick.

And right near the back of the waves is a good spot, maybe 3-9 feet of water was all we fished.
