Off fishing in Big Sky County, visiting my son and DIL . I brought my 15 foot Klamath boat over to transfer ownership to my son Matt. Time for me to thin the herd.
We drove 2 hrs north of Great Falls to Havre. Destination Fresno Reservoir. At 5,700 acres this impoundment is known for good walleye and pike fishing.
We decided to target the walleye and started fishing around 6:30 along the dam in 15-20 feet of water. Funny thing, first fish of the day was a solid 28" northern pike. We were trolling worm harnesses and I thought I had hooked the bottom at first, until the head shakes started. I thought I had hooked a nice walleye and was surprised to see the pike on my line. Matt netted it and then he hooked a couple walleye, losing a nice one and deep hooking a small one that we kept since it was bleeding.
From the dam we moved to several locations, affirming the old adage of never leave fish to find fish. All we could muster were a few bites and no more fish.
The weather was super hot, 95 degrees so we decided to call it a day around noon. Maybe that killed the bite.
It was also a day to check Matt off on using the boat, learning about the motors, backing the trailer, etc. All the things I'd learned in 25 years of boating in a one day crash course. We'll be out again tomorrow for more fishing and boating education!
