Really a maybe 3 star day, but I will get to that in a moment. I got on the water just after 7am and began my troll. I wanted to get an early start to beat the Memorial Day Weekend crowd, and more particularly, the slew of wake boarders, jet skiers, water skiers. inner tubers.... I think you get the point. Welp, no such luck. I was rockin' and rollin' all morning. It's bad being in a small boat, but in a kayak, it's another story altogether. I was fishing in rollers all morning long. My gear was going up, then down, then back up, then popped out of the clip. Ugg. Enough griping, besides, they were all courteous and have just as much right to the water as I do.

I ran my typical gear. Size 6 Doc Spratley flies, today in green and Red. Also tried an olive Woolly Bugger with nary a takedown. Mack's Double D dogders size 00 and about 12-14 inches of leader. I normally go 16-18, but needed to shorten them up a bit to get strikes. HIghlight of the morning was getting a takedown at 25 feet, about 5 feet from bottom. Nice chunky 14 in rainbow that slides right into the net. Just as I get the fish on deck, I glance over to the other line and see a DEEP bend, oh boy. Panic sets in. I know that is a good fish on the other line, in fact it came to the surface, while still on the clip, and made a loud splash, just to get my attention. Fumbling around I hastily try and get the other rod back in the holder, grab the line with the fish on, pop the clip, and it's on. Fish jumps a few more times before getting close to the kayak. Crap, other fish is still in the net. I quickly dump that one on the deck, hook still in mouth, and slide the net under the next fish. I was REALLY hoping for another 20+ inch fish, and at the time I would have sworn it was easily 20, but alas, it came in at 19 inches and 2.93lbs. Sure looked bigger!

In the end I landed 3, and lost 2 others on the way in. Slow fishing, but with all of that activity today, it's no wonder. 4 star day due to the nice fish, and that fun, panic filled double.

Meat again is fantastic on these fish.

Quick video of the excitement of the double.

Thanks. Was a rough day with all of the water craft out, but that double and the fish on the back end made it worthwhile. Its going to smoke up nice!

Cool thing about the lake is that big fish is only a plant from the 2016 fishing season. By fall this years fish will be 16-17 inches. That fish would have been 21-22 inches by fall and pushing 4lbs. Fish there do not go hungry at all, but its also what makes the lake harder to catch fish. Holder over

Nice going there Josh! Ill have to hit Goodwin soon. I was out at Goodwin but didn't fish this weekend. One bass fisherman who went by my parents dock told me he got 48 smallmouth Saturday... sounds like a fisherman story if you ask me! haha Last year September produced some great trout for me out there averaging 16 inches and over 1lb each!
Tight lines!

Sept - early October are definitely my favorite months there. Fish have been driven mainly to the same depths, and like you've seen that years fish will be 16-17 inches. Plus knowing that there is a chance that a 20+ inch fish could bite.........

Josh what length is that pole (green) and what action is it lite, medium, or heavy?

Hi Gary, it's actually a Tica UL 8 foot Kokanee rod. I enjoy the Kokanee rods because if the light action, makes even 12 inch fish fun, yet they are study enough in the butt to handle a downrigger.
