I wanted to smallmouth fish the incoming thunderstorm so I made a mad dash to Lake Whatcom, got all the AIS junk done for the year and was launched! I headed straight for the rock island and tried three of my favorite techniques for this lake without a bite? Not good. I decided to motor over to another area that's a shallower flat just before a main lake point and on a whim I picked up my swim jig that's been hammering the largemouth and gave it a chuck, immediately fish on?! I thought it was a fluke so I tried again and got smacked! Pulled three fish off that dock and just stayed with the bait. I boated about a dozen, including the 4.5 pounder before deciding to hook up the GoPro!

The bite stayed consistent but mostly small males. I got one more 3+ pound female fat with eggs but the rest were all 1.5 - 2.5.

The action got silly at times and I probably missed and or lost as many as I boated! The storm I anticipated swallowed up the sun and the bite fell off quickly. I then tried drop shot, jig and grubs but couldn't buy a bite. Too close to the spawn I think for the fronts to really jack up these fish? I've been pinned down by lightning on this lake in the past because I simply refused to leave due to the fishing being epic! July and August are better for the systems I guess.

Great job. Ya, I think this time of year the fish are a bit spooky when the weather goes bad, unlike later in the year when they like the rain and lighting better.

Absolute amazing! I have always believed that anyone who spends a lot of time fishing will have those kind of days -- And you do spend a lot of time chasing those bass.

BOB!! Good to hear from you sir! Thank you, I would have rated it a 5 if it wasn't for the smaller size of the fish. Hope you are doing well.

Great day on the lake! I was surprised to find myself feeling stuck on the golf course Thursday, after I could see some smallies coming shallow out off Sudden Valley. I even saw a big cutthroat (I think) get about three feet of air just as my buddy teed off over the water on hole 6, and as I walked the edge of the water I am pretty sure I saw some beds being made, there were bass a little deeper and cloudy patches scattered along the shallow shoreline of the hole. As soon as I finished, I ran out to the hole and tried throwing a jig, shaky head, and a senko but it was dumping so hard I could have just waded into the lake and been just as wet. Plus the lighting was right overhead, and flashing nearby. Your video is awesome too! By the rock island, are you referring to the hump/underwater rock point out near the golf course?

Negative. It's up in the north end more on the west side.
