I wanted to smallmouth fish the incoming thunderstorm so I made a mad dash to Lake Whatcom, got all the AIS junk done for the year and was launched! I headed straight for the rock island and tried three of my favorite techniques for this lake without a bite? Not good. I decided to motor over to another area that's a shallower flat just before a main lake point and on a whim I picked up my swim jig that's been hammering the largemouth and gave it a chuck, immediately fish on?! I thought it was a fluke so I tried again and got smacked! Pulled three fish off that dock and just stayed with the bait. I boated about a dozen, including the 4.5 pounder before deciding to hook up the GoPro!
The bite stayed consistent but mostly small males. I got one more 3+ pound female fat with eggs but the rest were all 1.5 - 2.5.
The action got silly at times and I probably missed and or lost as many as I boated! The storm I anticipated swallowed up the sun and the bite fell off quickly. I then tried drop shot, jig and grubs but couldn't buy a bite. Too close to the spawn I think for the fronts to really jack up these fish? I've been pinned down by lightning on this lake in the past because I simply refused to leave due to the fishing being epic! July and August are better for the systems I guess.
