Really late getting out, it's about 2:30pm when we get the boat launched. Our plan is to fish a run that is only a couple of miles away, we will have about a hour and a half to fish.
We arrive at the run we want to fish, it is a "go to" spot that we know very well, it is on the Idaho side, the run starts out fairly shallow, then there is a long section of deep water, then tapers up to shallow water again. at this point in time they seem to be holding in the deeper water, and where it starts to shallow up.
Barb holds the boat stationary where we want to start the back troll, I get the Honda started to warm it up, Then get the plugs all scented up, belly hooks baited with marinated shrimp, engage the TR-1 AutoPilot and start a slow back troll. We have not gone more than twenty feet and the center rod slams down, I tell Barb we've got one on, then take the rod out of the holder just as a beautiful Hen Steelhead comes blasting out of the water, I start to reel in, the line is slack and I think it's gone, then the rod bows over and she comes out of the water again, then she makes a long run downstream, she starts to roll, gets tangled in the leader, I pull her in about ten feet, then she rolls again, and gets untangled, she then comes out of the water two more times before Barb slides the net under her, this was one of the best fighting Steelhead we have caught this year, it was a pleasure to watch her swim away when we released her.
We had maneuvered to the middle of the river to land the fish, and are still at the top of the run, so we prepare the plugs and get the lines back in, we have agreed that the next one is Barb's, no matter which rod it is on. In about thirty minutes Barb yells "one on your rod", I tell her it's her fish. She then wrestles the rod out of the holder, and the fight is on, the fish makes a run away from the boat headed downstream, Barb gets the fish turned , and headed back toward the boat, it continued to be a tug of war, the Steelhead surfaced a couple of times, coming about half out of the water, after about twenty minutes I slid the net under another Steelhead Hen, what a beautiful fish.
There's about another hour of fishing time left before it gets dark, but after releasing the last fish we decide not to fish any more, and just enjoy the moment. I nose the boat into a sandbar, Barb pours us a mug of flavored coffee, the canyon is really quiet, we can hear a Kingfisher, and some other birds singing songs, it's so nice to just sit here and enjoy what mother nature gave us.
