Went up to Ayers Boat Basin again with the boat. First tried heading a couple miles upstream, to investigate an inlet on the north side of of the Snake. Fished that for a couple of hours, trying different depths and bait. Looked very fishy for bass, and perhaps spiny rays. But no catfish. Should have trolled a Rapala to see what the smallmouth fishery looked like.

Headed back down to the outside of the tunnel between the basin and the Snake. Immediately picked up one channel cat of the usual size (3-4 pounds) on a nightcrawlers, and had several other bites that I missed.. After that, it went cold. Finally left about 3:00 am, and it was blowing hard. Had trouble getting the boat back out of the water by myself in the dark with all that wind.

Generally speaking, seemed like it should have been better fishing. Not sure I'll head all the way up there again.

Well, barely maybe - but thanks. Driving an hour and a half for one four pound catfish isn't what I'd call superlative fishing. Best day out there was two 1-lb bullheads and two channel cats (3 and 5 pounds) in a whole night of fishing. Not exactly my goal of a cooler full of cats in an evening.

I think next time I'll exercise a couple of recommended locations - off Bateman (in a different spot then I tried before) and around Casey Pond.

Ultimately the problem is that I've got sooooo much to learn about catfish, and too little time or patience to figure them out. I'm a Reagan child - I demand immediate gratification, dammit. ;-P

In reality, I'm still more than a bit puzzled about their behavior - what do they do during the day, what water temperatures do they want, what do they feed on in this area, what is their behavior during the day and night, etc.

I did my best at night but you can get them in the day. Chicken livers; water dogs and fresh sucker meat have work for me. You keep putting in your time that's what makes a good fishermen and we will be asking you for tips. God bless
