Bro and I haven't been able to find time to go fishing, so we made time... Before work! Arrived at Wawaiwai launch at 4:30am Wed morning and fished till 7am. Then we hustled ourselves back home to get to work on time (which we did!.. with a little extra coffee, of course.)
Anyway, it was great to fish the early morning hours. Water level was quite high, and the fishing was tougher than either of us expected. We thought we'd have trouble keeping the dinks off our lines, but as it turned out we pitched quite a few different offerings only to get a couple dinks. That was in our usual spot (5-12' deep water area, pitching lip-less crankbaits and spinners). So we decided to branch out and fish a little deeper with crawdad softbaits. Over an old road bed in about 20' of water I nailed a nice (but skinny) 16" bass. Made my morning! Later, Jon managed a decent 14" bass on a lipless crank. That was about it for the trip before we had to point the bow back toward the launch and call it a morning.
Must say I'm still surprised at the unresponsiveness of the bass. We should've really been into them, but maybe the high water is a factor. Maybe we just didn't give it enough time, but I'm thinking they just weren't where we thought they'd be and we ran out of time trying to find them.
Anyway, great way to start the day!
