Enjoyed my first outing on Lake Roosevelt yesterday courtesy of Captain Dave Grove. The goal of the day was to test a variety of OG1 lures for the rainbow and kokanee. We launched out of the Keller Ferry Marina around 7:40 am. Water was cold enough that Dave ended up using the bow of his boat to break a sheet of ice that was formed just beyond the launch.

We were accompanied by Rob Holman of NWFR and his associate Paul Hamilton who helped capture the day on video.

Dave’s knowledge of the lake, and the fishery, is pretty remarkable. It’s obvious he knows this water like the back of his hand. In addition, his configuration of side-planers and downriggers let us cover a range of depths with six rods—each pulling different lures or attractor/lure combinations. (The three of us fishing had two-rod permits.) If you’re new to Lake Roosevelt and want to better understand this fishery, I’d highly recommend Captain Dave!

While we didn’t touch a kokanee, the rainbow fishing was good, and the OG1 proved very effective. We managed thirteen hatchery fish and released four wild bows.

The hot lure was a 2.8” OG1 in fluorescent orange. It took the bulk of our fish. Other colors that worked were: 2.44” in fluorescent orange, 2.44” black body with fluorescent pink tail (took our first fish), 1.8” black body with fluorescent orange tail, and 2.8” chartreuse.

Thanks for the pic of your lures, Ive been wondering what all the hype was about. Looks like a very high action lure! Probably a little more action but similar movement to a flatfish?

Hi Donn, We fished that same area three times last week. Every trip I use the lures you sent to me to test for you and every trip they produce fish. I have only boated two Kokanee on Old Goat lures but they are constant for catching trout. The one thing I am really impressed with is the action of the lure at 1.0 to 1.4 mph (the speed we have been trolling for Kokanee). When I'm using hoochies or Kekeda flies and the Kokanee bite slows down I switch over to Old Goat lures and start catching trout. I'm not much for running two poles at once but I'm going to give it a try, I am setting my boat up to run a Sidewinder Planer Board for my second rod. That rod is going to be dedicated to Old Goat Lures. And as I mentioned before as soon as the ice gets off Banks Lake I will be using the perch pattern lure behind a bottom bouncer for Walleye.
