Winter pre-spawn walleye fishing is going strong in Eastern Washington! We fished the John Day Pool on Saturday and got into lots of 18-20 inch eater sized walleyes, as well as a few bigger 4 lb fish. This time of year, patience is key. We fished several hours in the morning with no success working hard to find the fish. Once the fish were located, slow jigging presentations were the key to get them to strike. Spectrum and Kits Tackle Jigs were the hot jigs, tipped with Berkley Gulp plastics. Forage this time of year are small 3-4 inch shad smolts so match the hatch with your plastics and jig colors and you will be in the game. Fish a lot of water and be patient and you will be rewarded with some fine fish tacos!
