The weather has been so COLD over here that it has put a damper on fishing lake Roosevelt. Cabin fever is setting in bad with all who fish the big "pond". Marinas that are usually ice free in the winter are frozen solid; so much for launching the boat! But wait a minute reports say Spring Canyon is open; maybe just maybe the weather will moderate enough to get out.
Friend Ron has been wanting to get his new to him boat out for further shake down fishing trips after the 22' Hewes he owned was stolen and cut up for scrap back in August. So we planned the trip for Friday based on sparse fishing reports and a weather outlook that wasn't too bad. The trip down was a little icy (studs really help) and we arrived at the launch around 9:00in the fog. Seven other rigs were in the parking lot; looks like we weren't the only ones with fishing on our minds. First lines in about 9:30. Running three colors lead core off the planer boards and 18' on the down riggers in 33 degree water. Set the speed at 1.7 mph and away we went with a variety of tackle on the hunt. My fly went off twice (lead core) right away but they did not stick.
We trolled on looking for the magic kokanee and looking and looking.....finally up towards Swawilla basin my planer rod went off; big fish! O yes a 22" 4# silver bullet. What a fish indeed. We trolled the area some more but no more fish were to be caught for the day.
All in all a great day to be out and one Monsta Kokanee to show for our efforts. That fish ended up on the pellet grill kissed by the love of smoke with some shrimp at it's side. All I can say is YUM and I'll be back.

Tight Lines - Alan

To the rest of you sorry about fueling the kokanee pocks and cabin fever but someone had to do it right?

Hi fishingmom, you must be a cool mom after all you fish! As for rods on the downriggers I use two. One is a Crystal Basin Tackle rod that I really love. It is soft about half way down and then has some back bone to handle the bigger fish. The other downrigger rod I use is a Lamaglass 7' Kokanee rod, great rod too. I use a little heavier rod for the lead core like a medium lite. You want some of the wave action imparted to the fly or lure you are using. Many think it's heresy but I really like 10# power Pro line on the downrigger rods. The rods do the work and I don't loose many fish. I NEVER use snubbers. You are welcome to PM me if you would like more info.
