On a beautiful fall day, filtered sun, no wind and mild temperatures, I launched my small boat onto Wye Lake for a try for bass. Bass normally go on a feeding frenzy as they sense a cooling of the water temperature. I caught many small bass, mostly under a pound but one nice chunky 15 incher ended up being the largest of the day. All fish were caught on top water lures. Top water is definitely the most exciting way to entice bass. You can see the strike, hear the strike and feel the strike, all at the same instant. Wye is a fairly small lake with clear water, little aquatic vegetation and lots of houses around the lake. Most of the houses have private docks that provide shade and ambush areas for the bass. Wye Lake has a concrete plank launch ramp but the gravel has eroded around the edges. I launched my boat on the side of the ramp. No internal combustion engines are allowed on Wye Lake. It is a quiet, peaceful place to fish. My boat was the only one on the lake.!
If you do fish this lake, please plan to release most of your bass. Remember that all fish between 12 and 17 inches must be released according to the new laws. Tight lines!
