Left Hayden Idaho at 6 am for my first ever trip to Lake Roosevelt. Looking to catch the Kokanee of my lifetime. stopped in at country lane RV park in Wilbur WA. to purchase my new license and two pole permit, and some Ice. not really knowing were to go I ended up launching at Spring Canyon, and was fishing around 9am. working the far edge with lines set back 60 and 70 feet and clipped in the DR's at 7 and 11 feet down. lures were my own balanced and blueprinted bored .30 over, Green and pink hoochies. Bait on both rods was corn with various sent and color. 3/4 way across first rod went down and I mean really went down. after about 5-6 big jumps my red 44 macks doger from last year at lake Chelan and green hoochie came flying back with no fish. It was huge.. soon after getting rod back in water the other rod went down. and after an epic battle I netted a 19" beauty. just got the rod back to fishing and was changing the fishfinder setting and heard my reel singing in still in the downrigger. and landed a grand 20" kokanee done in 55 minutes and took a boat ride to look around. tried fishing for a rainbow but no luck. fish did not seem too picky. If you go for the first time you better have larger hooks and a net.

You said to bring larger hooks. What size were you using/what are you recommending?

most Kokanee lures seem to come small. I brought 1/0 black drop shot hooks and they were fine. but today I tested out 2 hooks tied 1/8 apart. 1/0 wide gap Gama finesse hook. and it was just wicked, and I would say its the one for me. we went 4 for 4 in 45 min. main reason I said the hook comment was of what I see at the dock is people fishing with gear for 7-11 inch fish. and these are strong big brute hog fish.I would guess you Brewster sockeye guys could use the same gear. I saw a lot of pop gear today and IMHO they have too much drag for this big of fish.

Nice job Killer. You had asked about a sharpener in a previous post. I'm assuming you meant a hook sharpener. I use a flat fine grit diamond file and stroke it away from the point very lightly. Gama's and owners are quite sharp out of the pack, but a light stroke will make em sticky sharp. I find one light pass on three sides does the trick.
