So with a trip planned to Eastern WA this weekend to celebrate Easter with our family in Wenatchee and Ephrata, my brother in law called Thursday and said we have to fish Saturday! Heck yea!! I left it up to him where to fish so he said we were going to chase the big kokanee's they have been getting on Lake Roosevelt and if it was too windy, we would hit Banks or Rufus.
We left Wenatchee at 5:30 am to meet my other bro in law at Big Wallys, We were on our way at 6:30 to make the drive to the lake! Got on the water by 7:30 at Spring canyon and started trolling right out of the launch. I was sworn to secrecy on his set up but I ran one long line out the back with a rainbow sling blade and spinner set up that I used last week on Lake WA tipped with gulp maggots.
Nothing for the 1st hour and soon a pretty good wind picked up so we trolled with the wind at our backs and ran west to troll. At around 9:30 got the 1st take down on the left rod in the downrigger~ as I was pulling it in the long line went down, so Scott grabbed that~ as we were both pulling in our fish the 3rd rod went down so now all hell broke loose on the boat!
I got mine in close 1st and noticed it was a rainbow so scooped it up with the net and deposited it into the boat; then with net in hand helped Scott land his next. That one went onto the floor and now the 3rd fish was getting close bu this guy wanted nothing to do with us and made a few runs before finally getting close enough for me to slide the nut under him! WOW! A triple and actually got all 3 into the boat! The last was the biggest at 19" and over 2 lbs!
Put on the lines back out and as we were making a turn the long line went down again and another beautiful kokanee was a victim of our boat! Weill I wish I could say it went like this all day but alas, the bite ended and we trolled around until noon without another bite. The wind was picking up pretty good so made a run up to Swalila bay ( probably not spelled right) where it was really nice but had the same results.
At around 3pm decided to call it a day but was very pleased with my 1st time ever fishing Lake Roosevelt and looking forward to coming back as the quality of these fish are amazing! Gave it a 3 due to just catching some fish and spending a great day of fellowship with 2 bro in laws!
Happy Easter and see you on the water!
