This report is for Captain Daves Guide Service. He asked me to post it for him as he is fishing the Vernita area and was unable to log on.
(Dave) I am having a great time down here on the Columbia River near the Vernita bridge. This
last week we have landed 31 King Salmon. Fishing is not easy by any means. But hopefully
with cooler water temperatures coming and more fish rolling in every day that will soon
change.
I seem to be fishing super baits less and less every day. Almost all my fish now are
being taken on plugs or eggs. I have been back trolling eggs in shallow water with jet
divers or in deeper water using my downrigger's. Both method seem to be really effective.
I can't begin to explain to you how nice it is watching the sun come up on the Columbia
River. I love my morning runs on the river. We frequently spot deer and coyotes on the
shores. A few days ago I was blessed to watch a herd of elk with a large five-point bull
with the herd. If you haven't had a chance to experience salmon fishing down on the
Columbia River I urge you to give me a call. It's wonderful just to be here and as far as
I'm concerned landing salmon is a bonus.
I have several more openings available this fall including this Friday and Saturday,
October 2 and third. I would like to offer any Northwest fishing reports member a $25 per
angler discount on a salmon trip. Feel free to call me for details.
Something else some of you may want to be aware of. There has been a rumor that the WDFG
is going to close the Vernita camping area to overnight camping next year. I talked to a
game warden that I ran into while I was down here and he confirmed the rumor. If this
closure would affect any of you I urge you to contact the fishing game department and
find out what's going on. I would also urge you to express to them how important this
camping area is and how much revenue the state generates because of it.
