Friend Ron and I sat and talked about the incredible Roosevelt kokanee while fishing at Loon on Friday. It comes down to a two kokane limit because no hatchery fish are being caught. But man are they beauties! Maybe.....

Ron installed some new downriggers on his boat and really wanted to go try them out. Hey lets drive the 100 miles to Spring Canyon on the Grand Coulee end of lake Roosevelt. Really? For two kokes each?? OK I'm in (took a long time to make my mind up) Left Ron's at 5:00 AM and we were in the water headed for Swawilia bay at 7:30.

Put on dodgers and pink UV Apexes tipped with white shoepeg corn. Sent them down 60' over 240' of water. Hhadn't been down 10 minutes when Ron's went off...then limp, what? Broke off the Apex half way to the dodger. New Apex and down it goes. Ron then lands his first what a beauty, 17 inches of silver flash. My rod went off shortly and a beauty of a kokanee came flying out of the water behind the boat. Sure glad for the nice custom kokanee rod I have to take the shock and not loose such a beautiful fish. This one was 18" and nearly 5" deep! What a fish.

We managed to catch our other two kokanee, no hatchery fish, before noon. Caught a couple of foot long trout while fishing for the kokanee. Moved the rods up to 35' and caught another trout, numerous small, small mouth bass and even an 18" Walleye suspended at 35' over a hundred feet of water.

What a great day, cool temps (unheard of in the summer at Roosevelt) nice weather and beautiful fish caught with friend Ron. Thanks for talking me into it!!

Alan

I guess if I'd read a little further I'd seen how you did at Loon. Thanks again.

Way to go Alan and Ron! I know what you mean, 'tis a long drive for two kokanee, but what great fish they are. Read in yesterday's S-R that some fin clipped kokes are showing up in the Spring Canyon area, first I've heard of that. The little 12" 'bows are a nuisance right now, and I send any we catch back to get bigger for fall/winter fishing. :-)

Great report and I can't wait to fish Rosevelt. I've been preparing for the trip for years but just can't seem to get there. Every time we plan a Lake Rosevelt trip, something happens to derail the plan at the last minute. I think that 2 or 3 days on the big lake in the winter is one of the dream trips on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing.

We could always meet you over there for a few days camp out and fishing. Or you could come over some time and meet us during the great winter fishery. Bucket lists must be done!!

Don't need an excuse to enjoy our (normally) good winter fishery. I just hope this year's wacky weather doesn't impact fall/winter fishing. We could have a mini NWFR get together on the East side.. :-)

Great idea Phil! A small get together there would be great idea. I'm another one of those that want's to come over and learn more about that fishery. Just haven't fished there before, so it would be great to have some expert input & guidance from people like you, Ron, & Al. Thanks! Dave
