Friend Ron and I sat and talked about the incredible Roosevelt kokanee while fishing at Loon on Friday. It comes down to a two kokane limit because no hatchery fish are being caught. But man are they beauties! Maybe.....
Ron installed some new downriggers on his boat and really wanted to go try them out. Hey lets drive the 100 miles to Spring Canyon on the Grand Coulee end of lake Roosevelt. Really? For two kokes each?? OK I'm in (took a long time to make my mind up) Left Ron's at 5:00 AM and we were in the water headed for Swawilia bay at 7:30.
Put on dodgers and pink UV Apexes tipped with white shoepeg corn. Sent them down 60' over 240' of water. Hhadn't been down 10 minutes when Ron's went off...then limp, what? Broke off the Apex half way to the dodger. New Apex and down it goes. Ron then lands his first what a beauty, 17 inches of silver flash. My rod went off shortly and a beauty of a kokanee came flying out of the water behind the boat. Sure glad for the nice custom kokanee rod I have to take the shock and not loose such a beautiful fish. This one was 18" and nearly 5" deep! What a fish.
We managed to catch our other two kokanee, no hatchery fish, before noon. Caught a couple of foot long trout while fishing for the kokanee. Moved the rods up to 35' and caught another trout, numerous small, small mouth bass and even an 18" Walleye suspended at 35' over a hundred feet of water.
What a great day, cool temps (unheard of in the summer at Roosevelt) nice weather and beautiful fish caught with friend Ron. Thanks for talking me into it!!
