I launched with my daughter from the Porcupine launch at 0600 and headed upriver to just below buoy 5. They lowered Roosevelt a couple more feet and it is definitely shallow as you approach the buoy 5 area, I saw as shallow as 3 ft. We trolled up 2 smallies and 2 walleyes using purple perch colored down deep husky jerks, 1 walleye was 17 inches so in the livewell he went. The rest of the morning was spent casting jigs and blade baits in back eddies. The total catch for the day was 30 eyes, 8 were dinks, we kept 8 between 17 and 22 inches and we released 14 over 23 inches. It was one of those days that only comes around once in a while; catching fish that are too big to keep. All of the eyes over 23 inches appeared to be spawned out females who were putting on the feed bag before heading down river. My daughter did an excellent job of hooking and landing some impressive eyes today. We both got to hear the sweet sound of our drag singing while fighting some long and skinny pigs. We had enough fish in the livewell for dinner so we were off the water by 1230.
