Ken joined us today for his first Roosevelt trout/Kokanee outing. We began trolling in front of the Spring Canyon launch heading toward the dam with lines in the water by 7:15. It was a grinder day trying to find some pattern. We never had a hit on crankbaits but pink Kedaka flies saved the day fished 9 inches behind Dodgers/sling blades tipped with red fire corn. Watermelon Apex fished the same way also yielded some fish. We ended up with 10 Kokanee and 3 trout. Nine of the Kokes were between 11-13 inches but Ken's first ever Koke was 19 1/2 inches. No carryover trout. All the fish came off the down riggers between 18-25 feet, speed 1.5-1.8 mph. Most of the fish came closer to the north shore than the south side. We wasted 1 hour briefly trying swawilla with zero results. We headed in at 2:00 pm. It was a fun day on the water and the first time we have ever ended up with more Kokes than trout.

That's a beautiful first Kokanee! I'm happy to hear the pink Kekedas were working for you. Thanks for the detailed report. I'm sure it'll help those fortunate enough to get out there and chase some fish.

Man a 20" Kokanee is a hell of a first fish. Nice job! I've night fished kokes on Loon lake since I was 10 years old (just turned 33) & I've only caught 2 that were bigger. That's a special fish. Side note: I did witness my uncle catch a 5 lb kokanee which broke his favorite rod, we weighed & then promptly cleaned it. Only to realize the next day that it would've been a state record at the time. The craziest part is my uncle said he had caught bigger ones before so he didn't think anything of it at the time. Not sure what year it was(maybe 1992) but I remember the record was around 4 1/2 lbs from Lake Roosevelt.

I witnessed a 4 3/4 lb kokanee come out of Deer lake in the 90s night fishing. I thought they went up to around 7lb?

I'm glad to hear about kokanee success at lake R. I would like to know if they taste better than the trout there. Love the candy orange trout from lake R.!
