What a great way to start out 2015! Left Spokane at 7:00AM with friends Scott and Ron and launched at Seven Bays. It was a balmy 18 degrees when we started fishing around 8:30. We talked with one of the local fishermen who live at Seven Bays and he said they had been catching their limits out in front. We started fishing just out of the launch and caught our first fish as soon as Ron got the first line out. Turned out to be the biggest one of the day at around 20". Continued fishing in the Seven Bays area catching a fish here and there on orange Kekeda and buck tails tied by Scott that were black with rainbow flash and a hint of orange and red. We continued to fish and had 10 by noon when it died completely. Now the big discussion; what do we do now? Hmmmmmmm......they say its my boat and I am the captain so I must make the decision.
I decided to head down river towards Sterling. On the way down a boat was coming towards us and looked like we were on an intersecting course. Who is that, does he know what he is doing? As we got closer I thought wait a minute that's my brother! We passed each other and I turned around as he had stopped. Got a report from him for Sterling (they were done with two limits) and headed home.
I changed up to Perch Kekeda, Scott put on one of his perchy looking flies and Ron chose an orange bellied Rapala. The Rapala went off first; then the Kekeda shortly after and the perch of Scott's right behind it. All of the sudden, in nothing flat, we had the other five fish we needed to fill out our 15 fish limit for the boat. Sure glad the captain made the right choice!
The fish were from 16" to 20"and were real fat toads . They were caught in the top 15' at 2 to 2.5 mph. The water was a cool 40.6 degrees today.
Have a great time and remember to be safe out there in winter conditions - Alan
