Dad and I hit the Bluffs on Wednesday for a little Chinook fishing. Started with herring behind rotating flashers but gave that up after about an hour. Went to divers and eggs and took us until 10:30 to get our first take, hammered dad's pole and first run was about 200 yards straight downstream. After about a 20 minute fight, got it close to the boat and it pops off, never got to see it. Must have been a nice fish for as hard as it pulled.
Finally able to get into one of my favorite holes as the number of fisherman has diminished. Drop in our hole and fish on after about 10 seconds. Fight it to the boat and see it is a hatchery steelhead, about 8lbs. Fun fish but cannot retain and I think he knew that as he released himself about 5 feet from the boat. Go back to the top of the drift, drop in, fish on after about 15 seconds, 3lb jack. Next drop, same thing, quick bite but long-line release. That was about it for us, headed home around 2:30. Part of the problem was river flow, I need quite a bit of current to be successful with the method we were using. The river is still pretty warm also and that may have affected our luck, still 67 degrees.
