Launched at Seven Bays about 7:45 and headed south to Whitestone. Lines in the water by 8:05 and my wife put the first fish in the cooler by 8:15. Nothing for the next 90 minutes so we moved upstream to try another spot. I hook up after about 20 minutes, then another lull. Kept working the same stretch and my wife hooks up with a nice one that goes 2lbs, 1oz. Our lab decides she needs a shore break so we make a quick run to Sterling Point, then return and focus on the same spot some more. I finally hook up after about half an hour, and then we go back to nothing again. It was after 1:00, so decided to move again and fished the north shore across from Sterling Point heading towards Lincoln. Decided we'd call it if nothing by 2:30, and when 2:30 rolled around, we hadn't even had a nibble, so gear in and stowed and back to Seven Bays we go.
Trolled my standard stuff for this time of year, leaded line and flies as well as long line with plugs. I tried several colors of flies and the ones that were productive yesterday were the Black Ant and Trick r Treat by Frisky Jenny. Not even my go to favorite perch pattern produced yesterday. The Rip'n Minnows were unproductive, as were the Apex and dodgers I replaced them with, no strikes with either.
Water surface temp was 39.5° when we launched and it rose to just over 40° by the time we recovered. Had heavy overcast/fog until after 11, then partly sunny to mostly sunny by 1:30. Mostly calm but there was some periods of decent wind chop, but our hits were so spread out I could not pinpoint any particular pattern. One thing I noticed was that when we did get a hit, it was a solid, no questions asked takedown, and each one resulted in a fish in the cooler.
Special treat for the day were the 30+ Bighorn Sheep we saw across from Lincoln on our way to Whitestone. They are really something to behold. A good day on the water despite less than spectacular fishing.
Was nice to meet and talk with fellow WA Lakes member Kfedka after loading the boat. Don't run into many WA Lakes members very often, so it was a nice surprise to meet and chat with him. :-)
