I had a very fun day today. Picked up my first fish around 5:30. Second fish boated 45 minutes later. Lost the third around 7:00. Boat traffic was heavy so I was avoiding the confines of the clusters as I was running solo. I ran one rod on the downrigger & one with 6 OZ. of lead out the other side. I finally got gutsy and joined the masses! That is when the fun started. I doubled up TWICE!! Thank god for 2 nets. At one time another boater offerred to help net 1 for me. I said heck no, I haven't ever had problems like this and I'm going to enjoy it! I had a fish jumpin' and scappin' at the back of the boat and it went around the kicker and in front of the the downrigger and headed towards another boat. As I'm trying to bring it back the downrigger gets hit! I make a feable but, succesful attempt at a one handded hook set as I have a rod in both hands. I put the rigger rod in the holder and do a slight adjutment to the kicker. I netted the first one and grabbed up the other rod. After netting the second fish there was chearing and applause. Two fish floppin' in the boat, adreneline flowing, hands shaking, I dig out my punch card & the fellow in the boat along side of me asks,"Do we have to punch Sockeye? I politely told him I was but, he could do whatever he wanted. The rod with the sinker out fished the downrigger 2 to 1. It must have had a slightly different action even though it was rigged the same. Orange mini squid tipped with shrimp behind an 0 dodger. A day to remember.
The quality of the meat seems very good. I thought they looked a little rough on the exterior. Sorry I didn't have a camera in the boat. Getting up at 2:30 to go fishin' I forgot it. 6 fish weighed a total 17 pounds.
