1/4/2012 2:22:00 PMMy buddies and I have been up and down the river as well as up the arm and it is slow everywhere. This has not been normal at all. We usually do quite well this time of year but not so far this winter. I wonder if the low water last year has forced the fish down extremely deep. Depending on where you live, Wholesale Sports in Spokane carries heavy tube jigs, I believe they go up to 1oz.. It is definitely hard to find heavy jigs to fish the deep water around here. I normally use a 5/8oz jig this time of year but even that is hard to use in 100' of water. You definitely have to be using line like Fireline to be successful, with mono at those depths you have way too much slack. The one downfall is that if you pull a Walleye up from that deep you have to fizz it or keep it.

1/4/2012 6:49:00 PMI was going to suggest the same thing. I usually don't use anything bigger than 5/8ths, but have gone to 3/4ers if it gets windy. I like to use the smallest head possible, and the Fireline is the key. Using mono would be almost impossible to feel the bottom with your jig, and the hooksets are really weak at those depths. Fireline cuts through the water quickly, won't float, and doesn't stretch on the hookset. If they are being really finicky, you can tie on an 18 inch flourocarbon leader.

1/5/2012 7:03:00 PMI was able to find 1oz. Erie style heads at White Elephant so they will work for know. I'm going to order a mold from Do-It so I can pour some gum ball style heads with a barb for my plastics. I get all the lead I need for nothing so it makes way more sense to pour my own. I use strictly Power Pro braid and a 6' flourocarbon leader at all times. It makes it easy to cut and re-tie and not have to worry about my leader getting too short. And with a double uni-knot it doesn't impead the casting ability.
