Bottom Fishing From Boat
Burbot

Read the report from CCT Mark on the 3rd. Had planned on fishing Waitts today, however wanted to try for some Burbot because I had never caught one. Launched at Lincoln and headed straight to Hawk Creek. Fished around the two white buoys with a 3/8 ounce jig head, a smoke colored twin tail grub, and of course some nightcrawler. Not 15 minutes into it hooked and landed my first Burbot. Partner and I caught 13 all together from 20 to 30 feet, and took 6 home. Super light biters. Can't count how many fish I missed. Little worm snatchers like Walleye, and I consider myself a relatively decent Walleye/Jig guy. Would never had felt them without braided line. Just pan fried some fish with a little garlic and butter. My daughter, wife, and I thought it was fantastic. Fish all ranged between 2 and 5 pounds. Good times!! How big do these things get?

way to go the state record is 18 or19 pounds when you get them 8 to10 pounds they give you a good fight.

Those bigger burbot do put up a decent scrap sometimes-other times they fight like a wet boot! 9Fresh water lings remind me of a giant sculpin on steroids...) i used to catch them up at Lake Chelan as a kid on homade copper pipe jigs and nightcrawler. Awesome to hear you got out. jiggy

Another setup that works for Burbot is basically a Trout setup with a sliding sinker, swivel and 6-12 inch leader with only a worm or 1/2 worm on a size 6 bait hook, let it sit and the bottom and they will come to you. Much better hook up rate because the smaller presentation helps them get the bait in their mouths.

Yeah I pretty much just started dead sticking and waited for them to take it. Moving the bait only allowed them to pull the worm loose. As for the fight, certainly not much to it. Very similar to walleye with a little less spunk.

I try to stay away from using night crawlers, it definitely cuts down on the worm stealers. If I do anything I dribble a little Berkeley walleye scent on my shad or grub body.
