Due to the fact that "everything is late" this year, I waited awhile to check out the fall walleye bite below Wells Dam. I also waited for a poor steelhead report, so that there would be less fishermen in the area. Unfortunately, neither worked to my advantage. We launched at daylight on the ramp that was supposed to have been "blown out" by high water this spring. It appeared the ramp merely got covered with cobbles, and then was "plowed" out. No problems launching. It was a typical brisk fall day, with light winds that became quite strong, but nice sunshine. Water temps were 52-54, air temps in the 40's, and 10-20 mph NW winds. There was plenty of good water flow. We had two nice walleye on, but lost them. We landed one pikeminnow. We tried spinners in many sizes and colors, with nightcrawlers. We tried jig with several different colors. We tried 3-way rig crankbaits. We tried shallow, deep, heavy current and slack water. We marked many fish in many places, but just couldn't make it happen. As usual, we had a great time and enjoyed a nice day on the water.
