Our first day of fishing at Ed Iman's yearly "Fish Camp", a gathering for guides, outdoor product reps, and writers. Aaron and I fished with Nolan Morgan, an Oregon tournament bass angler. Nolan knows the Columbia very well. He took us down to the Hood River boat launch on the Oregon side and we went down river a few miles and fished our way back. He and Aaron focused mainly on plastics (specifically a green tube set up), while I worked a Rapala Shad Rap, a rattletrap and also the new Macks Lures Promise Keeper. Mack's new hybrid wedding ring which works very well as a cast-able lure.
The weather was perfect temp-wise, mid 60s to start into the mid 70s. We fished from 7am until about 2pm when the wind pretty much blew us off the water. It wasn't light's out fishing, but it was pretty good and we all managed to catch some quality fish. I'm sure we would have done better if it wasn't quite as windy. The Columbia has really turned into one of my favorite destinations for smallmouth bass. It seems I can always count on getting quality fish every time I go out.
