Headed down to Bonneville to try and catch some shad. Shad are full of bones and almost not worth eating, but last year I caught 35 in one day so fun is fun. Plus i have been itching to try out my new st. croix ultralight. My brother and I got to the river around 7:30am and fished until 2:00pm. I immediately regreted not bringing any salmon gear as the people next to us were pulling in kings every 10 min plunking =(. The shad fish was decent, with me and my brother pulling one in every 20min or so. Mostley males and a few big females. We kept about 8 and released the rest. Big fish of the day was a large pike minnow which I should have turned in for the bounty instead of trying to filet it ha. The shad run should be getting in full swing here pretty quick maybe if I make it down there again i'll get my 35 fish day. But I would personaly rather catch salmon or crappie so maybe ill break the floatube out in a local pond.
Good luck out there!

Shad are great smoked and if you into canning, canned smoked shad is really worth the effort. If you crab, both pike minnow and shad are great baits. Lastly, shad is a great bait for sturgeon. I've gotta say that is about the largest pike minnow I have ever seen, if you want a bounty for them you need to register prior to fishing that day. http://www.pikeminnow.org/rules.html

Thanks for the info G-man =). I need to get a smoker and I dont know how to can ha. I do like shad, they taste great but the bones get to me. I saw a thing on youtube on how to filet them. You end up with bonless strips of meat, but its alot of work. As far as I know a squaw fish and a pike minnow are the same thing so I think we are both right=)

The term "squawfish" is no longer politically correct and the preferred term is "northern pike minnow". I've been doing my best to use the politically correct term, I slip up from time to time.

I'm just glad it's out of the river as it was full of eggs.

PC is just Polite Censorship, but the fishing looks fun on ultralight. Shad are wonderful sturgeon and catfish bait.

How to speak Austrailian: Squawfish/Pike minnow? = Fertilizer! Great report bro. Jiggy (and yes I would rather fish for crappie too!) Lol

I bbq'd some stan coffin catfish and shad strips tonight. I have to admit the shad was a little better. Shad is really good bbq, just have to work to get those boneless strips=) catfish and shad adobo style.
