This is my first report since finding this site. Took a non frequent fishing friend on an over-nighter to catch some Roosevelt bows. Launched at Ft. Spokane late Thursday night. Camped on the beach and started out bright and early Friday. Slow bite in the a.m. Fishing hand tied flies on leaded line- 3 colors out behind a planer board, and assorted spinners/rooster tails straight out behind the boat behind dodgers and cowbells. Running the spinners/rooster tails behind Brads divers about 150- 180- feet out 15-20 feet deep. Mid morning bite produced nice fish, all 18 - 20 inches. Lots of strikes and 6 kept in the boat at days end. Water temp 35 degrees and cloud covered skies. Very calm water no chop most of the day. Lots of rain in the afternoon. Best bites were at slower trolling speeds. 1.4 - 2.0 and most were going upstream rather than down. Started the next day (Saturday) with clear skies, very cold, Ice on everything including a little CPR on the T-8 to get the water flowing. Water temp still at 35, Clear skies, slight chop on the water, and consistant fish all morning. Same tackle, switched from silver to gold on cowbells and noted substantial increase in strikes. Limit in the boat by noon, all 18- 20 inch. Most productive were the hand tied flies behing a small dodger, 3 colors out.
Nice fish! all in the brine by evening, with a couple held out to bake like salmon. These fish are like Copper River salmon. Firm and really red. I love this winter fishery!!! Can't wait to take the next victim down to feel the rush of this great winter resource.
