We fished for three days on the lake over Memorial Day weekend and couldn't have asked for better fishing. The catching was tough at times as the wind was blowing off and on and the fish were big enough to win most of the battles. We landed a few koks in the 4lb range and lost plenty of others as well as some very nice bows. Each day the boat catch was between 15-30 fish total. We kept some for smoking and BBQ'n and released the others. The fish were taking anything from a black wooly bugger, orange rappalas, to our coulee special spinner with a flasher. Both koks and bows were active on the top of the water, raising all weekend. Downriggers were no deeper than 40ft mostly between 20ft and 30ft. The competition was intense between the leaded lines and downriggers, the winner depending on who you ask :) We target the secondary drop offs and cliffs that the fish like to hang close to or even on top of. I look forward to going back and getting some more giant koks... The one pic is of my dad who finally landed his 4lb kok on Monday after hearing about ours all weekend. After fishing for a couple of hours and catching some smaller koks he put on his "secret weapon" from the old days, and no kidding, as soon as he finished puting his rod in the holder the fish was on before he could sit down! Stay tuned...I will post the video on my blog soon.

Nice Kokes! I'm heading up there next Friday for Walleye. I am fishing out of Fort Spokake. From your picture, it looks like your off the slide area outside the mouth of the Spokane River. I have never fished for the Kokes. Are you using any wedding rings and maggots or white corn behind pop gear or small dodgers??. I'd like to get my electric downriggers into the action.

Thanks

Nice to see your report! I've been wondering where you've been and hoping to see some more kokanee pics like the ones you posted last year. Sounds like you had a great time despite the weather conditions. Can't wait to see your trip video! Couple questions - were the leaded lines also off the downriggers or used without? How far back? What areas seemed to be most productive? Thanks! :-)

Hewesfisher- The leaded lines were without the downrigger. They were about 3 1/2 to 5 colors out. Swalila Bay and the shore line down to Spring Canyon were the most productive. I like to fish the cliffs that drop down into the main channel of the lake. We have had success all the way up the lake past the Sanpoil using this technique. Some times they are off the deep side into the main channel and some times they are on top of the flats.
Elk- We are using a spinner that we make up that is similar to a wedding ring. We use different blades and blade colors from pink, silver, blue and purple and we use different color beads like green, red, pink, blue and clear. All the colors seem to work but blue and pink seemed to get the most time in the water. Also we use a variety of small flashers. A lot of the time no flasher and just a small spinner works the best off the downrigger. This past weekend the bows were hitting the wooly buggers and the koks were hitting the spinners and even a 4 inch orange rappala. The spinners we tip with white shoe peg corn or plastic maggots. You can run a double whammy hook set up or just a single hook. We tried some other things and had some success as well like a squid and a kok a nut.

Are the big walleye biting yet? We didn't have time to go after them but we will next time....

Hewesfisher,
I don't know. This will be my first time up this year. I suspect it will be tough fishing though due to the high water and low temps on the Spokane. Just a slower presentation and probably a lot of searching. Thanks for the info. It sounds as if you were a lot farther down the lake than the confluence. Do you know if they fish or catch any Kokes near the confluence???
