The Stennes' guided Glen Musser of Wenatchee and John Senseney of East Wenatchee for an Upper Columbia Steelheading adventure. They caught 9 hatchery fish, 2 natives and a triploid rainbow. Four were in the double digit range. This was pounding holes and seams all around Pateros. Purple shrimp baited Mack's Lures quarter ounce Rock Dancer jigs under slip floats was the ticket. They varied their presentation from 3 to 17 feet under the float depending on the depth of the run. They approach casting distance from their targets with as much stealth as possible. It seems that we are getting a nice "second run" of steelhead in the Upper Columbia as March approaches.

Anton, thanks for the great report! How was the meat quality on the hatchery keepers? Tight Lines, David

They need to be cooked lightly with some added oil. The flavor is ... Steelhead

Thanks for the great report! Can you speak to the water temperature? Maybe a slight warming trend brought some new fish in...

Water temp is still in the upper 30's. We just theorize that the brighter fish with the darker meat have just gotten to our section of the river. The darker skinned / lighter meated fish have probably been up here all winter. Some of our recent sunshine may be warming the shallower water, helping to turn them on.
