Well after fishing 13 of 14 days straight last year with zero success, my excitement to target the elusive sockeye on the river was lacking. So after watching the opener come and go, I decided it was time to give it another shot.
i wanted to fish first light but a couple beers the night before stopped me from having the desired early rise. However still made it down to the soccer fields in Burlington by 7ish. Only 3 guys down there when I showed up and with one fish caught at first light, go figure.
So I got situated just up stream and was back in the waiting game. After a change in gear and starting to place my gear only a few feet out, drop off was maybe 8-10 feet. And at 930, my pole hammered down and the line went completely slack. So I quickly got on the rod, and reeled in the lack to feel the long awaited feeling of a violent fighting sockeye!! After sliding on my butt down the bank with rod in one hand and net in other, there was some very tense moments as the mental clock was quickly ticking. It finally tired enough to make its way into my net and the sockeye curse was gone!!! Now we will see how long it takes to get another, hopefully not 13 days.
Fished for a couple more hours before needing to get ready to leave town. Another hit around 11 but nothing to show for it. Packed it in around noon and called it a success!!
