I have been Steel heading since opening day of summer run this year. Been about 8 times to Reiter ponds, and other places on the Stilly. Skunked EVERY SINGLE TIME!! Today I could just feel it, today would be my day. Took my little brother for his first trip ever Steel heading, both of our first time to fish the Wallace. We showed up around 7:15 am to the WA salmon hatchery. Made our way to the bank and followed the trail to an open spot pretty far down from "the pipes" as i heard it called. Waded in and started fishing eggs, then switched to a light pink/orange small aero jig. Was feeling good about the choice, still hadn't seen a fish caught yet. First cast with the new jig and long leader, watched it float by me and pretty far downstream BAM bobber down!!!! Adrenaline was really pumping but the fish spit the jig. Two casts later I landed my very first Steel head!!! One of the best feelings I've ever had, especially knowing that I learned everything and did it all alone. After nothing for the next half hour, we waded across the Wallace to where May creek dumps in, and fished the mouth of the creek, my brother got his first Steel head on the same jig, and I got one more on the same jig. Three really nice winter run fish on the same little pink and orange jig! Was the perfect cold, rainy day fishing. Cant wait to go for some more Steel head, but for now we'll have one for dinner. Other two are in some brine for the smoker!

Doesn't get much better than that! I vividly remember my first steelhead from the Toutle River in 1977....was an amazing feeling. Welcome to club!

The picture of you and your brother is priceless. Have that blown up and framed. As the years pass that picture will always be a reminder of what the truly important things in life are.

To billylwv most rivers have been closed to the targeting and retaining salmon. Mostly trying to protect spawning coho that being said the wallace and skykomish remained open for targeting steelhead and retaining of hatchery steele. Most rivers that ended up closing for salmon still remained open for steelhead. Always check your regs before you go out and look up emergency rules that might have gone into effect.

Has somebody been there recently? How is the water level with recent rain? Is it still at fishable levels?

Wow! Thank you everyone for the positive feedback. So awesome to read everyone's comments, this place is great! Definitely a day to remember, was an absolute blast, I've never had a feeling like that. The fish smoked great, and are my new favorite tasting fish. Delicious. Have not been back recently but plan on going Christmas week, give some more fish a chance to run and maybe the river will calm down and clear up a bit too. Everywhere is just about blown out right now. Great idea to get the picture frames, I like that. Thanks again to everyone! Tight lines
