I have been Steel heading since opening day of summer run this year. Been about 8 times to Reiter ponds, and other places on the Stilly. Skunked EVERY SINGLE TIME!! Today I could just feel it, today would be my day. Took my little brother for his first trip ever Steel heading, both of our first time to fish the Wallace. We showed up around 7:15 am to the WA salmon hatchery. Made our way to the bank and followed the trail to an open spot pretty far down from "the pipes" as i heard it called. Waded in and started fishing eggs, then switched to a light pink/orange small aero jig. Was feeling good about the choice, still hadn't seen a fish caught yet. First cast with the new jig and long leader, watched it float by me and pretty far downstream BAM bobber down!!!! Adrenaline was really pumping but the fish spit the jig. Two casts later I landed my very first Steel head!!! One of the best feelings I've ever had, especially knowing that I learned everything and did it all alone. After nothing for the next half hour, we waded across the Wallace to where May creek dumps in, and fished the mouth of the creek, my brother got his first Steel head on the same jig, and I got one more on the same jig. Three really nice winter run fish on the same little pink and orange jig! Was the perfect cold, rainy day fishing. Cant wait to go for some more Steel head, but for now we'll have one for dinner. Other two are in some brine for the smoker!
