Spent a full day in my favorite urban kayak fishery at Swan Island Basin. This locale has built a reputation among local kayak anglers as THE place to easily access and catch dinosaurs (aka White Sturgeon) year round. Catching white sturgeon from a kayak is probably one of the greatest thrills of my life and something I love to do once every few months. I highly encourage everyone, kayak angler or not, to go out and enjoy the catch and release sturgeon fishery on the lower Willamette but it is SO much better from a kayak.
The morning bite started off fairly slow. Some scouting with the electronics revealed good numbers of sturgeon near the mouth of the basin and after switching over from herring to shad the bite really turned. I racked up 23 sturgeon for the day. Most fish were under 48". However, I caught three oversize including one 6' fish that took me on an 8 minute sleigh ride and left my arms burning.
