Got to the river EARLY... Didn't see another person for a few hours and after hitting a couple miles of river I know why; Very few fish. I saw four fish all morning from daylight to noon. At one point I was twitching jigs in a corner hole when two guys came up and saw a fish in the same hole and proceeded to try to snag it. I was in disbelief. I've never actually seen someone blatantly try to snag a fish with a treble hook and weight BELOW the hook.

Did you get a description? Did you see their car to get a license #? Did you have cell phone service? Bob R

Did you take their picture? I find that a VERY useful tool to curb illegal behavior such as this. It can be forwarded to appropiate enforcement, tribal or state. They may not get them this time, but they will know what they look like. Bob R

last year I did yell at them, turns out they are Quilcene tribal members and have the right to fish with the weight below the hook.there were 4 or 5 of them going from hole to hole snagging right in front of the guys drift fishing. And I definitely yelled at them. never thought of taking pics with the cell phone, great idea! thanks for the river report. hatchery has only received 50 fish so far rain will bring 'em in.

I stopped fishing and was just staring at them. The fact that I open carry my Glock when I fish this river may have given them reservation since the attempts at snagging were less than enthusiastic. I find that by carrying my .45 a lot of illegal fisherman get paranoid and will not snag/floss by me. I've had a lot of people ask me if I'm WDFW when I fish in Quilcene and I always tell them "no," but the only people who ask are guys who are fishing legally. These guys were carrying two other rods with legal gear so I don't think they were tribal...I could be wrong, but the one guy had red hair and a red beard so I think he was more Scottish than Native. I also called the reporting hotline, however I wasn't going to leave a voice mail when these idiots would be long gone. And we were more than a mile downriver, so following them to their car was not going to happen. And I was going to take pictures but also didn't want to escalate the situation. I figure if you are willing to flagrantly violate the law as it relates to fish than who knows what else these two guys were willing to try.
