My wife and I made our annual trip to the confluence of the Palouse and Snake River in search of the big fat blue cats that run up the Palouse about this time. Well, we got there too early and as best we can make of it, the cats are still in the Snake. We did spot some carp rolling at the mouth of the Palouse as they do when they spawn, so my guess is that we were too early by maybe a week possibly two. The cool and wet weather have delayed the good fishing.
We used chicken liver and worms and did manage a dozen pesky yellow bullheads and even a smallie, but no blues to be seen.
I spoke with a couple old timers who I've seen over there before and their guess was the first week of June should see an increase in activity.
A couple guys showed up with a nice load of blues, but they went up the Snake toward Tucannon River mouth at some "secret" location.
Anyway it was a gorgeous few days and I'll never complain about spending a few good days fishing with my wife even if the catching stunk.
I'd also like to add that we stayed at the KOA just across the river and would recommend the facility as Jim and his staff are always cordial and helpful.
