I am blessed to live in a place with access to beautiful, somewhat desolate areas. After work Friday I decided with a gusting southwest wind on the Snake to hike down into the Palouse canyon from Palouse Falls and cast a line. This is a hike for sure footed people. It is steep and there are a few spots of loose scree you have to scramble up/down (see picture of Keta).

The river was pretty protected from the wind. Was hoping some bigger bass would be holding up near the falls for pre-spawn but no such luck. Casting curly tails in smoke, brown and chartreuse I caught three smallmouth and three pikeminnow. Fish were in the tail outs/back eddies of faster runs. Biggest smallie was ten inches, so not quite big enough for the frying pan as I've instilled a 12 inch minimum this year. Missed a couple other small bites, probably just pikeminnow. Nothing picture worthy, the trip was more of a chance to get the dog out on a good run, enjoy some nature and simply get a line wet and feel that tug.

Tight lines all!

Now that would be an interesting place to fish from shore.

That fractured basalt makes for some tough walking! Thanks for the great pics. Old guys like me will have to stick to the boat for sure.

I've wondered what was down at the base of those falls. The smallmouth bite on the main snake has been productive for me going out about twice a week. Not hot but consistent, a few fish at a time on dropshot or tubes, then some really fast action occasionally on jerkbaits. Water has been murky up here and temps are ranging from 49-53.
