A fellow kayak fisherman and myself fished for white sturgeon on the Willamette River. We launched around 8 AM. Despite marking dense concentrations of sturgeon below us and seeing many roll on the surface we did not connect with any fish until around 10 AM. After that it was lights out fishing with constant hookups every 10 minutes and occasional doubles. It was a blast! In total we caught between 30-40 fish. Most fish averaged 3-4' with a few 5-6' fish as well. The larger fish really take you on a slayride! We were primarily using fresh smelt dipped from the Cowlitz that day or last week but they were also biting squid and sand shrimp. The density of fish was truly amazing. They were at least 20+ sturgeon marks below us at all times and frequently they would get so dense that our fish finders could not differentiate between bottom and sturgeon.
