Hit the river today looking for coho. Saw one shiny fish come out of some riffles and make a couple leaps so got my gearout and setup shop. Got the boys gear in the water first, hoping to find a cutt or two, then began tossing some of my first batch of eggs. Unlike the first bag I cured, this bag was borax only, and dried just till they were slightly tacky.

Have to say, I didnt hook any coho (I only saw one anyways) but those zombie kings loved them. I hooked 6, one of them twice. And he was a rather bronze looking fellow, and none too keen about coming to shore. First time I hooked him, he made a beeline for the bank below me, going under a tree with a bunch of stuff under it. Fought him for about 3 minutes, gaining ground and losing ground, until finally he decided he had had enough. One hard pull and I lost a few more yards of line, and he finally broke my line at the rootball.

Caught him again about 10 minutes later, but this time I got his head turned before he hit the riffles, and after 5 minutes or so, got him to the bank. Stepped down to grab him and off he went, straight out across the river, snapping me off again. At least I had the bobber I had lost the first go-around back, I had grabbed it right before reaching for his tail. As expensive those clear bobbers are, I'm content having him win, twice even!

Didnt get anything succesfully 'caught', so no pics but those of the little man. Hooked some fish, and it was a beautiful, warm and sunny fall day to be on the water, spending some quality father-son time outdoors.

Thanks for the report, didn't realize the Skook was getting runs of salmon. I cross over it all the time but I never checked it out. Sounds like you had a great day with your sons, way to go!

Right now is the tail end of the chinook run, but there is no fishing for them on the Skookumchuck. With the coho starting to show at the hatchery, there are a lot of boot kings still around that will bite. Steelhead start showing in late December, with the bulk of the run coming later than most winter runs on other rivers; they start coming in thicker around late February/early March.

Oh, and the "boys" above was supposed to have an apostophe. Just have the one, 4 1/2 years old and already asking to go fishing every chance he gets.

Cool! Thanks for all the info. And just a suggestion: if you want to make a real lifetime fishing partner out of that little guy of yours, take him crappie fishing when the crappie are biting. He'll catch a ton of 'em and that will really turn him on to fishing! And also....BE PATIENT! When you take him with you, remember it's all about HIM catching fish, not you! LOL I know that's hard sometimes but take it from one who knows...

;-)

Tight lines my friend!
