Got to the river at daybreak with ilvlakecassidy from this website. he was using a jig under a float, I focused on using hardware, blue fox, Dick night, and twitching jigs. we hiked long and far, trudged through water and woods to find a good hole. All I can say is we need rain to push up the next batch of coho. I also brought a pack of worms just in case. That was the only thing I caught anything on. I got an 11" whitefish. Then a 8" cutt. Then I hook up.... I fought it in near shore, i shout down the bank at my friend but he didnt hear me. I had a chromer on... But it wasnt a salmon... This was,a cutthroat of 20". Long story short my line was frayed from drifting all morning and it ended up getting snapped off :( I was using a trout rod with 6# mono, 3/8s Oz split shot 20" lead hook and worm. For drifting worms, my other setup was rigged with 20# mono mainline, and 12# flourocarbine leader for salmon. What a terrible feeling it was... I know better I should've checked/retied my line.. Ohhh well a fine day to be on the river fish or not.

It is slow for coho. Maybe it was a small run. Although, I've heard they are still in the salt too.

Jesse,
While the regs don't say you can't keep cutts in the Sky, they must be at least 14 inches. I personally never keep any trout from these rivers with the exception of hatchery steelhead. IMO, even a "rainbow" over 14 inches should not be kept because they can still carry the genes of our wild steelhead and can indeed be the parent of wild steelhead.

I disagree about the cutts, they are abundant and can be kept if over 14" and there is no need to feel bad about it. but i do agree the rainbows should be left alone. it seems like 95% of the trout i catch in the rivers are cutts.

The coho run isn't over...not even close. We just need some more rain to push that fresh batch of fish upstream. Should be great after the weekend.

I'm not so sure about the part where sea run cutthroats are abundant. They are very much protected in the salt for a reason. These are beautiful creatures that share almost the same habits as steelhead and fight extremely well for their size. I still can't understand the disconnect why WDFW would not let you retain them in the salt but once they come in the rivers where they of course get funneled and deceivingly appear more, then they allow you to retain them. Yes it may be legal (check the regs) in some rivers to keep them but It sure would be awesome to have consistency in the rules. For me, I enjoy the fact that they are there and on occasion, save a really bad day of fishing like it did yours. I personally release them. It's not always all about the meat they hardly have any in them anyway....
