My life partner and I had a few hours available to get in on the action on the Skykomish. We set out at 0500 to see if we could get a spot near the prison hole in Monroe. We figured that after the rain that we'd been getting there would be a Coho push from the salt. Oddly, by the time we reached our spot on the bank at 0700, there were virtually no other fishermen around. Fish were surfacing all over the place. We didn't waste any time getting lines in the water. Given that the water level was higher and visibility was less, we changed up our color scheme on the terminal gear to be much brighter. I'm glad we did. We caught our limits in 50 minutes. The previous weekend we were running jigs under floats, but decided yesterday to run a drift set up. Using 20# braid, we added a 1 oz. cannonball sinker to a swivel. The terminal gear consisted of a 6 ft. leader to a piece of hot pink yarn, tipped with a prawn tail. This was the ticket. First cast, I hooked a humped up pink and threw it back. We proceeded to land one Coho and filled out the limit with pinks. What a way to spend an anniversary morning.
