Given the timing of the tides and how slow it's been closer to home for me, I decided to venture further up river in the Kent area this morning. I scoped out a few spot on Google Maps as I don't typically fish this area and found what looked to be a couple well traveled banks on the river.

I started out floating eggs, but was not really getting the drift I wanted, and the current was a bit swifter than I prefer for float fishing, so switched up to drifting eggs.

After that I switched to the trusy 50/50, but wasnt seeing any action on that. My last attempt before it was time to pack up and head to the office was a jig. First cast, let the jig sink for a bit, and give it my first twitch, and then it was fish on.

Hooked her right through the lips, so no chance of getting off this time. Nice bright hen, and she was packed full of eggs which is always a nice bonus.

It really paid off bringing an extra rod this morning. At one point early on in the morning, I pulled back and let a cast go and right at that moment, a flock of geese (or maybe it was ducks....they were moving pretty fast) came zooming past over my head and wouldn't you know it, my weight and DN nails one of them.

I should have slapped my bail shut and held on for a ride, but I was too busy muttering to myself "there's no way that just happened." The ducks just kept on zooming upstream and before I could count to 3 I was spooled. I'm watching the flock shoot up stream in formation and then when my line snaps off, I see one bird take a nose dive into the river.

It shakes itself off for a couple seconds, and just lifts off to catch up with the rest of the flock. I hope that the bird wasn't hooked and maybe the line just kind of lassoed em'. Otherwise he's going to be dragging some pencil lead and about 50yrds of line around for awhile.

I'll be heading out again tomorrow morning. Not sure if I'll go to the same spot or not, I'm going to check the maps again and see if I can find something I like a little better.

I recognize the blackberry leaves in the back ground of that photo so I know exactly where you were. ;p

By the way that is pretty common about the water fowl. Last year I had a coho on the line that I was bringing in an literally as it was 20 feet away a low flying duck flew right into my line then went smashing into the river flopped around getting it's wing wrapped up, the jig came free from the fish only to stick into the duck as it flew away. was busy cutting the line while it was taking off and luckily didn't damage and gear. Ever since then I have been pretty rude to ducks around, I make sure they are a good distance away.

Congrats BK. Nice work on landing the chrome. I was out at lunch and couldn't get the jigs to pay out. I've had a lot of close calls with the ducks myself, especially lately for some reason, but have managed to avoid them thus far. A few weeks ago I did see one run into a guys line across the river as the duck was flying upriver. As the line played out over the duck it picked the spinner right out of the water and winged it up into a tree. The duck kept on flying and the guys lure was stuck in the tree over the water.....needless to say, he was not too happy. The ducks can be a nuisance.
Good luck tomorrow morning.

Geez, you can tell exactly where I was from a couple blackberry bushes on the ground? Fish the Green much? :-)

I had know idea it was that common. Here I was thinking it was some kind of once in a million freak accident. I guess I'll have to keep my eye out for those guys from now on, haha.
