Sorry this report is late. Been slammed at work and with holiday stuff, back to the report.
I am new to fishing for Salmon and Steelhead in this area and was pointed to the Carbon for both. I know that the Carbon is now closed to Salmon but open for Steelhead. As I mention I do not know where to go as of yet for Steelies, but am gathering information on where to go every day. I found a hole on the carbon that looked very promising for fish. Once I walked up to the spot I could see dozens of Chums in the shallow slow water. I decided to try the faster water a little up river- no need to start in there with a bunch of boots. I fished several methods with no success on Steelies- yes I know way to early for that on the Carbon, found that out when I got back into town. But I did hook into some nice sized Chums, even some in decent shape. The pig I am holding was in a group of hawgs at the tail end of some really deep water. These fish were to big to ignore. I tossed corkies, eggs and jigs under a float at them and nothing. I managed to hook one of them with a corkie, the fish more swatted at the thing then it did hit it. The only thing I saw of that fish was a flash then it took off like a King- needless to say I was not prepared for that. I have 10lb P-line on which has never been an issue before but that fish made real short work of it.
Quick tie and back in the water. This time I decide to bounce a jig right down the middle of the group. About 5 cast in this hawg decided to take me for a 20 plus minute ride. He didnt take off like a drag car more like a bulldozer, very slow very strong and very determined. Up river, down river, across the river and repeat three times not once breaking the surface. Pulled him out took the hook out, I admit I was concerned about the teeth and possibility of needing rabies shot if he bit me then gently released back into the water. Several more small chums finished the day off.
I was fishing with a guy from here, but never got his name. But he gave me the Jig to get down to the big fish, the jigs I had were too small. He ties his own and gotta say they were some sweet rigs. Thanks again. Need to meet back up with you and repay you in kind.
And if you know where a fat guy can go and catch some steelies let me know. Yes a fat guy so no 10 mile hikes. :)
