I decided to take my 7 year old boy out for his first ever steelhead trip. With the river conditions so low and clear, we weren't expecting any action. We tried a stretch of river that had good and safe bank access, but I had only fished once before.
About 30 minutes into our adventure, my boy Drew was done casting and was occupied exploring the bank. I got a soft bite drifting a sand shrimp, set the hook and it was fish on! I handed the rod off to Drew who had a little trouble with the baitcasting setup, but I managed to net his first ever steelhead! A 4-5 lb CHROME hen.
As it started getting closer to dusk, I started casting far out into a seam with the spinning setup and a jig. I saw the take-down, set the hook and handed the rod off to Drew. This one had a bit more fight, but Drew did great. After a good battle for several minutes, he steered it towards my net and I secured it. This was a large buck approximately 8-10 lbs with a hint of color.
What a fantastic day to take my kid out for his first ever steelhead adventure - and to get a limit!
