Came home from college for Thanksgiving to spend some time with the family and do a little fishing. Of course I get back on Tuesday when all the rivers were blown but I hit the Raging river on Wednesday and Thursday and only managed to catch a couple boot silvers and a small native steelhead that went about 4 lbs.
The real reason for this report is for when I went fishing with my dad on Friday. We decided to stay away from the crowds at Reiter and started fishing opposite from the Sultan. On the walk out to the river my dad found a jig head buried in the ground with a worn pink hootchie skirt hanging off the hook. Must have been used for the pink run. Anyways, after fishing with spinners to no avail, we switched spots to the other side of the river and fished the confluence just above the Sultan.
We ended up trying everything in those deep holes. Spinners, spoons, drifting corkies, bobber/jig, twitching jigs. Nothing. Every once in awhile there would be a boot coho that would break the water but that was about it. My dad decided to take a little nap on a boulder and as he did I saw something big and bright dart out of the water maybe 3 feet from where my dad was sleeping. Just mocking us. I went over to where he was sleeping and tied on that ugly jig he found in the sand 3 hours earlier. Casted it out, waited until it hit the bottom, and started twiching it back.....nothing. My dad woke up literally right after i made my second cast and I as we were talking something almost ripped the rod out of my hand. Knew it was a coho right away. Violent head shakes and death rolls and after about 6 minutes my dad threw his arms in the water and tossed a gorgeous hen as far up on the bank as he could.
10 pound semi-chrome hen, caught on 6 pound test that I forgot I had on my baitcaster....and the jig fell out right before my dad grabbed her. Great meat and another great memory with my dad. I do not know how we got a fish that birght this late in the season. I will put a picture up when I upload one. Great weather. Awesome day.
