Fishing solo, I launched the old bass boat onto Horseshoe Lake. I had a bone to pick with one very big bass that broke me off and stole my favorite top water plug last spring. Well, I couldn't find that bass but I probably saw more than a dozen bass crusing the shallows that must have weighted between 3 and 6 pounds. My first hookup came as I cast a Rapala near a dock. A large bass slurped in the lure. I got a good look at the fish before she shook the hook. It reminded me a lot of a hookup and loss last Monday at Spencer Lake. I didn't spend much time fretting about the loss because on the very next dock, 2 casts later I hooked up with a 17 1/2 inch bass that weighed 3 pounds even. I hooked a few smaller bass before connecting with another lunker that weighed 3 pounds, 3 ounces. It also hit a Rapala and was 17 1/2 inches long. The ol' lunkers are getting active. A nice morning on the lake.
