Left Spokane at 5 AM to get down to just shy of Buzzard Roost by 8:30. Hiked with my Black Lab Buck down to the river on the trail that runs northeast of the trailhead. Broke out a black and grey Rapala and tossed it into the deep pool at the end of the trail. That old bull trout came out of the darkness and rolled over the lure in a missed strike. I cast the same lure back in a second time and Bam! He came up like a shark and hammered it. I had a light spinning rod with 6 lb test and had a great time bringing him in. He was a 21 inch bull, long in the jaw and with plenty of battle scars. Turned him loose and he disappeared into the darkness as quickly as he appeared.
I switched to spinners after while and moved up and down river hitting several deep pools. I landed and released a 13 inch bull and hooked another sizeable bull, probably about 18 inches, but he shook the hook before I could net him. The rest of the morning I caughe about twelve 10-12" cuts that I released. I was hoping for a couple of bigger cuts to take home to eat, but but they never showed up. 65 degrees on a partly cloudy Fall day. Buck forded the river like a champ and stayed with me until it was time to hike out. Awesome day.
