Well, I finally thawed out from my fishing trip to Caliche Lake. On March 8th, a Friday, my son and I drove over from Auburn early in the morning. The pass was 18 degrees and snowing, but it was much warmer at the lake. It was 30 degrees with a 10 to 15 MPH wind. The fishing was very slow and the bite was very soft. We lost 3 or 4 before we realized we would have to let the fish chew on the bait a lot longer. My son caught the first trout, a nice 13 inch bright Rainbow. Two hours later, I finally caught one. Two more friends joined us at noon and then we all began catching fish. We had arranged for a motel at nearby Quincy and knocked off early due to the cold wind. There were 4 other fishermen there also but I didn’t see any fish caught. Early Saturday morning, we went back to the lake, this time the wind was blowing harder, and the sun was hiding behind an overcast sky. The temperature was still at 29 or 30 degrees. After a couple of hours, the bite started again. We lost a lot of fish while we were hunting for tree limbs to throw on the fire. At 2:00 PM, we called it quits. My son and I took home 8 large trout and my two fishing buddies took home 12 large trout. I had not fished for trout in 4 or 5 years or more so was not up on the latest stinky bait in a bottle, (power bait). My fishing buddy produced several little jars of the nasty smelling pills and lo and behold, the fish seemed to like it. Not only that but preferred the pink ones. The trout we caught were full of snails, I think Berkley should make snail flavored power bait. Anyway, we had a great time, bonding with our sons and friends. This lake is easy to get to and fishable from the bank.
