Well this was my first time ever river fishing...didn't really know what part of the river to go too. I fished for about 2 hrs. After about the first 45 min i started to get desprate and threw out some spinners and such. I could never really tell if l was getting a nibble or not because of the current. There are a lot of snags. Anyone have any advice for river fishing? I think i might need to get some waders or something. I want to get prepared for the salmon run that is coming up in august-october. Anyone got any advice?

It's pretty early still for a lot of cutt throat to be in the river but despite voight creek hatchery being destroyed by floods this year there should still be prospects for some steelhead in the puyallup river/carbon . Right now if I was targeting steelhead I would go to the upper river from 115th hole to carbon confluence. Should atleast still see some steelies for the next four years.. hopefully our state will get the program running again.
Salmon fishing on the puyallup ..... August start low .. like Levee road in fife DONT FISH THE CROWDS every one crowds up at the weigh station , under the bridge at Clarks creek mouth<----Illegal!
There is plenty of fish running that whole stretch fish really anywhere off that road and your guranteed fish Run bright colors People say orange and pink are best.. .they are but run everything from white to yellow and everycolor in between for silvers and pinks . I Run red for kings early on ... Hope that helps some oneGood luck.. o yeah if you want to catch fish on the puyallup waders are a must.... good felt boots also will make for a enjoyable season. Steph speaks the truth...you will definatly need waders and boots....also a nice sensitive rod helps with feeling out the snags! (there are some bad ones) and if this year is anything like its projected you'll have a hard time not catchin fish!

Good luck!

Walmart has a set of waders I call them throw aways cuz they only last one season, they are thin so wear pants under them and only old pair or shoes keep the laces short tho. The waders at walmart are about 9 bucks for the cheapos they will get you fishing.
If you decide you like river fishing (wich u will) lol you will want to invest in a good wading setup. about 50 bucks for nice hodgeman neoprine chestys, or 70-80 for decent breathable stocking foot waders. people always advise getting a one size bigger wading boot but ive found that the manufacturer has always adjusted the size for you, so if you wear a 10 get a 10!
Felt rocks boots run about 30 bucks and are worth every penny.
helicopter photos has size up the school of salmon heading is 5x5 square miles big!!!! good run!
