At 1:30am (7-08-09) the most instantaneous value for this river was 2540cfs. That is very low. I had booked a trip with Mystical Legends Guide Service for myself and my son. My son didn’t want to go. So I asked my neighbor Nick if he worked tomorrow (this was Tuesday evening). No he was off. “Do you want to go fishing on a guided fishing trip tomorrow?” He answered “Yes”. He has never caught a steelhead before. So we met at my vehicle between our houses at 3 am and took off. We were on the water around 5:15am with Phil. Even as it was getting light there was a sled straight out from the Blue Creek launch with fish on. I thought this is looking good. Because the other times this year that I had been here I haven’t been able to bring anything home.
Well, Nick hooked the first fish. A sucker. A big sucker that released itself at the boat. We hooked cutthroats, as well as steelhead babies. We saw several boats with fish on…some were lost, the others netted.
The end of our story is; hooked 4 netted 2 very bright steelhead. Nick has his first steelhead in his refrigerator. I got to bring one home, too. I caught steelhead here last year but these fish fought harder than last year. There were jumps, runs, under the boat, around the motor. It was exciting and FUN. We caught them free drifting.
The weather was cloudy and at times windy. Only a few sprinkles. The river being this low Phil had to raise and lower his motor to be safe. There were areas that we were grazing rocks. If you go out be careful. They have kept the flow at just above 2500 at least through today (Thurs. 9th 8:30pm).

Great report Toni, and way to go.
Nice silver bullets!
The bait color says red.
Bait says "other"?
Red what......eggs? ......corky/yarn? ..........secret?
Guess I'll have to hire a guide to find out, lol.
I'm guessing eggs.
Hope to see you and fishinrob on the puy/carbon this season.

The options for color and what one is fishing like isn't complete. We were free drifting "drift fishing". We did use eggs part of the time and they were red. We used different colored corkies (color didn't matter) with a purple pink piece of prawn in the egg loop. There is no option for prawn. (prawn) The type we get frozen from the store to eat but these were cured.

I did 3 of 5 because of what it says when one submits a report. If fishing 10 hours to catch one is should have given it a 2 BUT because these fish were so fresh, feisty (better than fish from last year) I put 3. A 4 is catching fish constantly...this was not the case. I forgot to mention that Nick also had a steel head hooked that jumped and got off. It was similar size.
