I left my house at 3:30 am to get down to the Cowlitz at Blue Creek at about 5 am. Just light enough to get to fishing. There were a ton of people camped out at the boat launch and a bunch of boats going in the water. I started fishing from shore a ways upstream from the launch where a nice little rill comes around a corner and flows back into the deeper current. Really tough to fish the river from shore because the current is so strong you only get about a 10 second drift either off the bottom with weight or floating a jig under a bobber. I saw a guy on the shore get 1 small fish, maybe a jack steelhead? The boats were having a much easier time getting to the cover on the far side of the river, but I still only saw one other steelhead get caught in the 5 hours I was there fishing. All in all, for summer fishing at least, I suggest you bring a boat or get a guide to fish here. I'll be back on the shore in the winter trying again though.... (I SO NEED A BOAT!)
